Eyes have to stay moist all the time to stay comfortable. Our built-in system of keeping them moist is complex and delicately balanced. It’s fair to say that human beings are sitting ducks for dry eyes for a number of reasons, primarily because our normal skin bacteria can upset the balance. Some people are more likely to develop dry eyes than others. These include office workers, who frequently spend long hours at computer screens, and who do this in air-conditioned offices.
Our behaviour at computer screens is different from when we’re just walking around. Primarily, we don’t blink very much. Blinking does about 4 things that help to maintain the balance of moisture on your eyes, and these things all go out the window when we sit staring a screen. Air conditioning exacerbates dry eyes by increasing evaporation rates.
“Dry Eyes” don’t sound like a big deal, but in reality they can make your day pretty miserable. Fortunately there are ways to significantly help office workers with sore eyes. At ICU we have a structured programme to get your dry eyes under control, then keep them that way with minimal intervention. It’s not just “here’s some drops, use them when you have to” and it takes into account the complexities of the eye’s complex lubrication system.
